All the available merge fields like Event Date or Event Name that are in the editor toolbox (see arrow below) are ONLY applicable to communications areas of the system like in email messages. Although the merge field icon does appear on the landing page toolbox the fields are only applicable to certain features like communications. If you want to include the title of the event or event date(s), simply type this information into the text field manually.
